Spectrum manufactures a complete range of ion exchange resins for
preparative scale ion exchange chromatography. Spectra/Gel
Ion Exchange Resins are ideally suited to protein purification, antibody
isolation, and peptide fractionation. They are also used in traditional
inorganic ion exchange.
Spectra/Gel Ion Exchange Resins are durable, insoluble, and compatible with most aqueous and organic solvents. The structural polymeric backbone of the resin is styrene cross-linked with 2% to 8% divinylbenzene. The amount of cross-linkage determines both the pore size of the media and the capacity of the resin. (The pore size can be significant when separating proteins but is of little significance when doing inorganic separations.)
The type of exchange performed (cation or anion) is determined by the functional group added to the resin. Cation exchange resins have a sulfonic acid functional group as the ion exchange site. Anion exchange resins have a trimethylbenzylammonium functional group as the ion exchange site. Both cation and anion exchange resins are available.

Spectra/Gel anion exchange resins are strong (type 1) ion exchange resins. They use a trimethylbenzylammonium group as the exchange site. They are supplied in the chloride form (with a chloride ion occupying the exchange site). This form is very stable and has an excellent shelf life.
These resins are available in 3 different bead sizes. The medium (75-150µm diameter) and large (150-300µm diameter) beads are most useful for gravity flow and batch (non-flow) applications. The larger size of the beads makes for ready flow and easy separation from a bulk liquid. The medium (75-150µm diameter) and small (40-75µm diameter) beads are most useful for pumped applications. The smaller size of the beads reduces the chromatography plate height (provides more rapid equilibration at higher flow rates).
These resins are available with 3 different amount of cross-linkage in the polystyrene backbone. The greater the cross-linkage the greater the capacity of the resin and the smaller the pore size. For inorganic ion exchange the pore size is usually of little interest. For globular proteins the approximate exclusion limits are 3000 daltons at 2%, 1500 daltons at 4% and 1000 daltons at 8% cross-linkage.

Spectra/Gel cation exchange resins are strong (type 50) ion exchange resins. They use a sulfonic acid group as the exchange site. They are supplied in the hydrogen form (with a hydrogen ion occupying the exchange site). This form is very stable and has an excellent shelf life.
